FacebookWatch is a community of people who a) consider Facebook to be an indispensable social utility and b) are concerned about its incredible power over our lives. We believe that Facebook is a net social good, but worry that its sheer size could prevent the voices of its users from being heard. When there is no centralized community pushing as one for the interests of the users, it becomes altogether to easy for a company to ignore them.
We have created FacebookWatch to provide that centralized community. We intend to be the definitive repository of user news and movements. Every privacy flap; every clickwrap complaint; every user group demanding some sort of action of Facebook. This site should be a coordinating force, a place where people can come to be educated about community issues, to join existing groups, or to form their own.
We envision FacebookWatch as leveling the playing field between Facebook the firm and Facebook the community of users. We, the users, provide Facebook with its value – it is only fair that we have some say over how that value is experienced.
We are not opposed to Facebook. On the contrary, we are among its most devoted members. But sometimes tough love is necessary. Sometimes regular people need to collect their action so that their utilities reflect their interests. That’s what we do.
